Exodus’ Editorial Services
Toni Morrison once said, “Good editors are really the third eye. Cool. Dispassionate. They don’t love you or your work.”
Good words, as we all want and need the calculated precision of an editor's surgical eye and hand when it comes to perfecting our works. However, I find that I am very much the opposite of this practice.
As an editor, to place myself within the position of the sterile observer, striking my way through sentences–the pen as my sword and the paper as my victim–would rob away the treasures of working within a creative field. Those treasures, being the joys of a potential that has yet to be found, or of one that has been found and simply needs fleshing-out. I am endlessly inspired by potentials and impossibilities, knowing that their success is entirely dependent upon the person, the plan, and the consistent execution of practice.
As an editor, my editorial style is lenient towards that of a trusty person who treats your work–through its damages, plot holes, strengths, excellencies and unresolved (s)–with caring hands, eyes and ink. Within that care and space, I invite a respectful professional relationship in which we may sit together in conversation, humor, and open-mindedness in order to get your manuscript to be as excellent as it can be.
REVIEWS
“Exodus gives you the proper care every writer needs when their work is in it’s incubation stage. She reads with patient eyes that want to understand. She thoroughly praises the work’s strengths while also pointing out growth areas. All of it is done with love and attentiveness. She reads with enough depth to not only connect the themes of your work to the larger world but also to provide essential questions that encourages you to reflect on what you truly want to make of your work. She has enough foresight as an editor to provide opportunities where your work can be expanded to new heights and honed. All writers need an editor like Exodus, who operates in honesty and a genuine love for the written word.” -Herbert Girtley Jr.
